a few of everett's favorite things

Everett is in love with maps - treasure maps, zoo maps, "Thomas maps" (the brochures that comes with his Thomas trains). He loves the globe, and daddy helps him discover where we are - and where tigers and kangaroos live.

He hasn't discarded any of his loves from the May update - but he has some new obsessions. He loves yellow, or "yeyyow" as he says. While he'll tell you that blue is his favorite color, he typically picks a yeyyow or orange if he has a choice. And he's discovered a new show (new as of this month): Go Diego Go. We talked about whether Dora or Diego was his favorite, today, and they're both his favorite. Also his favorite: whatever toy is currently being advertised on TV. We've been having the materialism chats, but they don't seem to be sinking in...yet.

And this one is classic. Everett loves farts. Lovely right? You should hear he and his daddy playing fart games - with his animals, with the trains, with their own bodies. Toilet humor - you gotta love it.

He also loves rocks, and spiders, and trees, and the ocean, and mountains, and lakes, and cranes, and train tracks, and fountains, and animals, and the fair, and the zoo, and the park, and... you get the picture. Everett, like any typical three-year-old, is in love with life. "That's really cool!" he'll say. Or, "that makes me BERRY happy!" Ok, Blueberry Shortcake. That makes me happy, too.

Everett loves trains more than anything. Except maybe his mama and his daddy. But it's a toss-up.

As any good little boy or girl, Everett is in love with Thomas the Tank Engine and all his friends. Which friend does he like best? Sometimes it's James (the red engine, of course), sometimes it's Percy, other times it's Toby or Gordon or Henry or Harold or...you get the picture. He has about seven different sets of tracks (oops, mama went a little crazy at the Bins); daddy is committed to focusing on future purchases only in the Target Thomas line. But mama believes in ... umm ... choice. And too many toys ;)

Everett also loves books, words, letters and puzzles. He's into "H" and "O" and, of course, "X". Which is easy to make with his chopsticks. He likes to "count letters" which is pretty cute. He loves big picture books with large images of letters and the things for which they stand ("A starts with Army!" he says happily), and letter puzzles, too.

Everett loves all things scary - ghosts and monsters and foggy fogs. He has some scary books that he adores - some Halloween books, one called A Nightmare in My Attic, a couple of books where Thomas and his friends get scared. He loves scary videos, like his Veggietales Where is God When You're Scared?. He's literally obsessed with being scared.

Everett's a media-savvy kid. He loves Backyardigans and Dora the Explorer and Thomas and Berenstein Bears and - I'm embarrassed to say - Tom & Jerry (which he calls "cat and mouse"). He also loves the Care Bears, which is pretty cute. Also, pretty much everything on PBS Kids is a favorite, from Caillou to Arthur to Barney (although mom's not a big fan of Barney, for the record).

As any good child of these particular parents, Everett loves all things athletic - running and jumping and absolutely anything with a ball. While we're trying to set him up to be a football player and track star, we're sure he'd be happy to play anything from soccer to baseball to lacrosse to street hockey. He's one sports-loving kid.

Everett is wearing 4T clothes - he's a big boy. His shoes are about a 12/13. He likes orange, yellow, red and blue the best.

April 2004

Everett is turning in to such a control freak! He has loved hats for so long, but now is beginning to play little games with the hats that go something like this:

So, Everett loves hats of all kinds, even pretend hats made out of foam packing, spoons, paper, etc.

Everett is also completely infatuated with balls. If anyone is drawing pictures for Everett, he repeatedly asks for balls, and when a circle is drawn, he responds with such excitement that you can't help but draw another, and another, until you have exhausted your knowledge of different sorts of balls (tonight I drew 5 footballs, several basketballs, 10 tennis balls, and a baseball). He is a great thrower and is learning to catch. He also loves rackets, bats, sticks, shovels, and anything else that can be used to pick up balls or hit balls. Many of the control freak games involve rackets. Once he even used a ball point pen in place of a racket. You would have to see my re-enactment to understand. Our little ball boy.

Everett loves the Wiggles. Oh boy, does he love the Wiggles. He likes to sing their songs, dance to their music, and ask endlessly "whassthat?" while watching the show (which he usually gets to watch while mom showers and gets dressed in the morning). He also loves Jo Jo's Circus, Dora the Explorer, Stanley, and Teletubbies, but nothing gets him going like the Wiggles. Whenever he gets a chance, he watches Finding Nemo.

Everett likes to figure out how to put things together; he loves blocks and wooden puzzles and pens with lids and, well, anything that fits together. Everett loves to draw and watch other people draw. He likes to play with phones and he holds the phone between his head and his shoulder to "talk." He adores ride-on or rocking toys (his rocking cow, rocking horse, little cars, tricycles). We had a meltdown while testing out a used vintage tricycle at our favorite used furniture store, when I tore him off the beloved vehicle. That vaulted the tricycle to number one on the birthday list.

The really cool thing is that Everett loves the people in his life; loves his mama, of course, and his daddy, but also loves his grandparents, his uncles and aunts, his friends, the little boys he shares a nanny with, and the little girls he goes on playdates with. Everett loves the people who walk past us in the store or on the street. Everett just is a friendly guy. I wonder where he gets it?

Everett is in size 7/8 for shoes and now wears a 2T or small 3T clothing. He is 38 pounds, 34 inches tall and growing.
